The Music
Samyo performs a unique repertoire of specially composed music, written especially for the orchestra. Since 2003, Milapfest has commissioned a list of world-renowned maestros, based in the UK and from around the world, as well as young composers, to teach and compose Samyo musicians.
Over the years, the repertoire has developed a unique style of multi-layered ensemble music, bringing together instruments and students trained in both North and South Indian Music.
The orchestra is both traditional and modern, classical and contemporary and has pioneered a brand new form of music. For Samyo’s members, playing this repertoire is a distinctive challenge, outside the common expertise of students learning in the UK. It is also uniquely British, as it combines experiences from the rich repertoire of the Indian subcontinent, with the modern experiences of both composers and musicians.
A Samyo concert is a rich experience, as it combines delicate solos and scintillating percussion pieces with dramatic and sweeping orchestral movements.
After a series of one-off, diverse compositions, in 2009, the orchestra created its first ever thematic production, “Tributes”, with Indian Dance, Bollywood, World Music, World Peace and the English Lake District, taking precedence in a showcase concert in March 2010.
